Some types of optical gain media are sensitive to the polarization state of the optical pump and require expensive polarization-maintaining components. In particular, in fiber-doped amplifiers where there is a difference in amplification as a function of the bias of the incident signal. Giga Concept offers innovative and inexpensive manual polarization control systems. The polarization controller technology developed and marketed by Giga Concept is patent-pending and the company wants to innovate by adding dynamic control functionality to its system. Giga Concept’s technology is based on the principle that it is possible to create a 1/4 to 1/3 wave delay by local compression on the optical fiber. Rotating micromotors induce torsional stress to the fiber which stretches the fiber and generates the variation of the state of polarization. The objective of the project was to operate the polarization control automatically and enslaved.
